Week 13 QR codes

I have been looking into qr codes vis a vis the English classroom.  Starting at least two years ago I started to notice the qr codes on all kinds of different materials.  It is an impressive and useful technology.  No doubt.  I am ambivalent about bringing them into the English classroom.  Qr codes, for those of us who are less familiar, are like bar codes.  You might find them on (most) wedding invitations in Israel.  The application on your smartphone which reads qr codes picks up the information in the code and produces it instantaneously.  So getting driving directions, a business card, or a link to a website or application is all at a single point (this one-inch square).  The reason I am ambivalent is pretty simple.  First of all, practically speaking it is totally irrelevant for me at the present time.  The students at the schools where I teach are forbidden from using smartphones during class.  Perhaps I would look differently on things if my students were using smartphones in class.  I think I would probably try to use the qr codes immediately.  It really depnds on the level of techology that is utilized on the school-wide level.
